A desktop writing app built on plain Markdown files and folders. Link by default

Mosaic is a desktop writing app, built with Electron, TypeScript and React. It is still under construction.

It is the next attempt at ideas first built as two separate apps: Fractal, which kept projects as structured folders of documents, and Amanite, the editor built on top of it. Each kept its own copy of a document and had to keep the two in step, and that coordination kept getting in the way of writing. In Mosaic, the writing has one owner, and saving never reaches back into the editor.

Two ideas guide it:

  • Implicit linking, just write. Mention a document by name and the connection shows up while you write, without a link being inserted into the text.
  • Your data, always transformable. Writing lives in plain Markdown files and ordinary folders that stay useful outside the app.
